The series, which has run for 35 years and aired more than 8, episodes , had been on a monthlong hiatus because of social distancing measures that have halted the production of television and films in Australia and around the globe. As such, it could set an important precedent for the global screen industry as it tries to figure out how a phased reintroduction to shooting television series and films might work.
To film the show safely, the production has put several rules and routines in place. All cast and crew members have their temperature checked when they enter the studio. Once on set, they are divided into cordoned off shooting units, with only three actors permitted to cross between these designated zones at any time.

Other soaps — as well as films and TV shows — could resume filming as Neighbours set the benchmark for on set testing, filming, and dividing up cast so filming can continue even if some actors fall ill. Never miss an update on schools, pubs and coronavirus cases with our morning newsletter straight to your inbox. Iconic Australian soap Neighbours has resumed filming amid the coronavirus pandemic, with a series of safety measures that could lead the industry, it’s claimed.
The cast and crew of the Aussie show are heading back to work next week after one month of lockdown on the show, with experts claiming it could be used as an example of how best to resume filming other programmes around the world. British soaps like Coronation Street and EastEnders fear they will soon run out of episodes as filming shut down weeks ago as the UK went into lockdown.
But the Neighbours approach involves using camera tricks and separating cast members into different groups to minimise risk. TV and Film bible Deadline listed the safety precautions that Neighbours have put in place to get filming back under way — and suspect other shows and films could follow suit. The measure means that if one member of cast or crew falls sick, that quadrant team can then be suspended while the other two groups carry on.
Actors will practice social distancing but camera tricks will be employed to make it look like the cast and characters are standing closer together — however physical contact, kissing scenes and other intimate scenes will be banned. While extras will be banned, with crew members stepping up to pose in the background of scenes instead.
